Ok, so we all know Hunters get a bad wrap. And frankly I can see why. Most people don't have a damn clue how to play this class and just fire off random shots. Well I've worked damn hard to try and overcome the "Class-ial Stereotypes". This thread will be everything and all things hunter related, so if you've got questions, fire away!

which is better. marks or surv? it seems to change with every patch. beast is best for leveling, but at 80 which is better for dps since that is all that we can do.

Well you're right, this does seem to change constantly. It used to be a clear cut which spec was meant for what: Beast Mastery was your leveling/solo spec, Marksman was your pure dps spec, and Survival was the PvP spec. However this all changed with WotLK and the introduction of 2 new shots for SV ... Black Arrow and Explosive Shot. A few other talents were moved around as well, mostly from SV to MM to balance out the crowd control aspect, so that there's alot of debate now as to which is best for what. Obviously it will depend alot on your play style, but here's a small breakdown on the differences.
Since the launch of WotLK, up to the current patch (3.2.2 ... 3.3 is on PTR and hunter changes are unknown at this time, but I'll update it once we know), MM and SV are very close together in dps output. You'll see tons of debate between people on this, but what most people don't realize is that the correct answer comes down 2 things ... Gear (are you stacking Agility for crit, or Attack Power, for overall base power) and even more importantly, the fight! If you're looking at a simple tank and spank fight, or any fight that you can literally just stand there and spam your shots (Patchwerk, KT etc), SV is going to out DPS a MM by nearly 20% everytime. However, the more you're required to run around while you pew-pew, the more this hurts SV and benefits a MM, closing that gap drastically. Although both specs will be taking a dps hit, the MM hit won't be AS heavy as the SV dps hit. With this though, there are very few fights were a MM will out dps a SV; SV is just too strong right now. With all of this though, there is something to be said for MM though, especially in 25man raids. MM comes with a very benficial raidwide buff that alot of people will love, even though (just by being a MM spec) will hurt your dps. Trueshot Aura gives the raid (within a certain distance) a 10% attack power increase. So in the end it all comes down do you want your dps to sky rocket (which is more useful in 5's and 10 man's) or do you want to be a lil lower on the charts but helping the rest of the raid increase their dps (again, much more helpful in 25's). Bottom line, if you're looking to max out your dps, Survival is the way to go (for now anyway).

ok. thank you. and by the way, if that is what you call a small breakdown then i do not want to see the novel you write when you go into full detail. lol. thanks though. i am just gonna stay surv then. i seem to know this spec now. and i do not see the point of hunters going duel spec since it will not change our roll in the fights.

Yeah D-spec is rough for alot of people to grasp for pure dps classes like Hunters, Mages, Loc's and Rogues. But there are reasons for it. Most people will have their standard spec they normally use, and then they'll either have a "utility spec" which helps raids more, or most of the time a pvp spec. And hard as it is to believe hunters have both these available as well. The utility spec for hunters will have Trueshot Aura to buff the raid as well as spec into some mana regen abilities that are available. These regen talents will help the entire party (Healers love it) gain mana as these talents proc. And obviously the pvp spec has it's own pro's as well (if you pvp). It'll have things like improved burst dps, but less long haul dps, increased stamina, increased range of shots, and improved crowd control (Concussive barrage, stuns, silence, improved traps, etc)
Yes, we're a pure dps class. But we are far from just stand pew pew things to death .. not all specs are created equal lol.
